That means that if you show people that the open source alternative is better anyway (example, OO.o vs. MS Office), then the closed source software will fail all on its own.
toga heh :)
Patent!!
the kernel should always be open. as long as that happens, then I don't mind closed sources apps for Linux; so long as the companies are competing fairly

What about Linux in the Movies! No one mentioned that!

when did slack do the ver # jump?
2004, the year IBM will own everything

Linux is the movies these days!!!!
at the end it will be only IBM
really??

woo-hoo!

MS is just a toy we keep around to bash :)
Slackware but it wouldn't install off the stack o floppies so I ordered FreeBSD 2.0 on CD...
Microsoft is irrelevant, SCO is futile!

core linux users and power users loved the zaurus

the largest zaurus install was a railroad company
i have 2 laptops and one is old
stock: yeah I heard that... is a... how much would pay?... article

CTX
the other is less than 6 months old
HP
they replaced an application on a notebook with an app on a zaurus
JasonPerlow: dunno, that Zaurus CL looks much bettter than a palm.. or CE
gave it to all their field engieers
one of mine is an old apple powerbook running YellowDog
they had an application that ran in python
I know someone that did that, but they put gentoo on it
pyQT
cool
so they used it to diagnose all teh railroad switching systems in teh field
for those kinds of vertical apps linux is great
iv'e been playing with PyQT
Gentoo crapped out on the install here... went with SuSE / Mandrake 10 / Mandrake 9.2
just lately
on my ex box
JZA well i'd say its the wrong appraoch : sell a monthly subscription for $10,= a month, and have ppl drink your c0ffee and beverages at normal prices , just get the WiFi connected crowd inside
nobody cares about the PIM applications and crap like that

they do
as a stand alone unit though running field applications its excellent
I mean you can ssh from your zaurus
hell you can run apache and php on it
Maybe Motorola and Cellphone integration will help that
I used it to remote admin egullet.com
JasonPerlow: PDA should have phone plugged so is usable
with mysql lite
I cant wait for a Zaurus-Cell phone integration
JZA... yea
JZA: motorola is working on it

JZA motorola is working on Linux Cellphones... but not PDA
however I assure you IBM has lots of stuff up its sleeve
Somebody mentioned you can communicate with a cell phone via infrared port on the Zaurus.
good
give it a year or two and they will have some amazing stuff
what happened to the windows ce mobile phones? last thing i read, was that caller-id was malfunctioning.

its good if you have hardware that is compatible and certified
namaseit well 10 meters is enough i would say, for such purposes
my buddy uses it with his palm and his nokia phone
beats irda for sure
it works, but its quirky
i would stick with IR for phone. even crappy ones come with it
JasonPerlow: Which version of OZ u running?
MGALUG bluetooth won't pass the 10 meter (4 yards) limit i would say...
or am i mistaking here
phantom: 3.2, I think
been a while since I upgraded it
theres also TKCrom with all TheKompany apps on it
supposed to be decent
Im torn on theKompany.com
JasonPerlow: 3.3.5 here. Santa just brought me my 5500 and I love it. But I must say Opera is a disappointment.
--> asaone (~ken@tamqfl1-ar6-4-62-209-075.tamqfl1.dsl-verizon.net) has joined #linuxshow
I hate them, yet I like them
yeah Konqueror is much better
hmm interview : "Paul Mockapetris On The Future of DNS" on /.
PhantomsDad, you can put konq on it
one to read
JasonPerlow: Really, I thought Konq was "rough".
it works good
stock: yah I read that one
i dont really browse on my Z
<-- mm has quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
primarily use it for email access and IM
namaseit i just cam home, when show was in progress :(
my 5500 is serial number 10
JasonPerlow: OK, will give it a try. Opera was supposed to do a great job of sizing websites to the small screen, but it doesn't really seem to do that very well. I use elinks instead.
came even
I've beaten the hell out if it

I'm hoping the new HP gets a Openzaurus port soon
the new HP with the keyboard
later mga
I really want a pda to come with usb *in* it, not just usb hook-up
yeah USB hosting is cool but it requires a lot of power
JasonPerlow: The Z 7000 and 8000 series are interesting with the 640x480 screen, but expensive.

12.23.2003 irc

--> You are now talking on #linuxshow

however, it does not support the really old cirrus logic graphic cards
NZheretic: got 2.6 running yet?
I've got 2.6 going, I need to re-compile, missed the PC speaker and my beeps are missing.
I dont have 2.6.0 running yet, just 2.6.0-test11
the one thing that makes mepis different then knoppix is that it has got a icon on the desktop (in demo mode) that launches a fully automated installation script. it even has a disk partitioner / formater
MGALUG : Waiting for new year.
anyone got it going on Mandrake?
yea...me too
my mail server/web server is running test10
just got my warranty replacement 160GB maxtor back ...installed tonight
i would upgrade but don't want to kill my uptime :)
but need new case
then I
will consider 2.6
my western digital 120 gig is starting to crap out on me
piece of crud
thank goodness for 3 year manufacturer warranty cause I definately will need it
I have several of those WD 120s at work... no probs yet.. kow
i stay away from western digital & maxtor hard drives. they are worthless
well I wish I had bought the 120 maxtor cause they *were* cheaper at the time and plus, I prefer maxtor
seagate drives are the way to go
bought the 120 gig WD for its 8mb cache
mind crapped out after only 2 months
$80 from Staples

chrisb: hello... had vision of the thing crapping out on my just 2 weeks prior to it tanking
actually, all hardware is a freaking crap shoot. Come on lucky number 7
<-- asaone has quit (Quit: using sirc version 2.211+KSIRC/1.2.1) backed up to one of my work removable drives... whew
photos, music, important stuff was on that drive
Eyecon: Sorry got distracted... yes my wife does use windows well, but she does not know computers technically very well...
had the click of death.
yah well I have had my hard drive go bad so many times I learned quickly if its important back it up another machine
mine is using Linux now... kinda forced her into it
think this one got too hot
yah
--> Bob (~chatzilla@c-24-9-153-120.client.comcast.net) has joined #linuxshow
was in the top corner of my case...
I had a maxtor 30 gig single platter hd that went bad from heat
had cooling turbo fan, but it was not enough
in fact its warranty is up this month :--> asaone (~root@tamqfl1-ar6-4-62-215-252.tamqfl1.dsl-verizon.net) has joined #linuxshow
lol, I think I have it working
the 80GB maxtor I got from the Dumpster.... yea, dumpster still working
Sorry for the intrusion, but Largo Florida is NOT moving to Ximain. They are evalutating it! But they haven't done anything yet.
fine
SO there is no show tonight?
the best investment you can do for your box is to get a cd burner & do constant backups of your files every week
nope
* viking667 wants an 8Gb that actually WORKS!!!
There is one, just not one done tonight. :-)
that would be nice to have too
I'd be EXCEPTIONALLY happy to get bigger than this, of course.
8GB drive ..
well on my mail server I have 2 harddrives, main one and second with backups. I have a php script that backs up '/home' at 12:00 morning and noon.
newbie: How about a 40 GB tape... and backup daily...
http://madpenguins.net/log.php
MGALUG: well, my biggest is a 4Gb Quantum Bigfoot...
those were workhorses
still are
My next biggest is a 3.4Gb Maxtor, which has performed flawlessly
I had a 15 maxtor that worked for years until the pins fell out lol
I thing the more they cram into these things the more likely they will tank
MGALUG: if they ever get bad sectors, it's time to consider retiring them, but until then, they're pretty good.
still have a 10 gig maxtor that runs perfectly
you may want to considder getting seagate drives
mine got fat bread errors 2weeks prior to tanking
have a 15 gig maxtor that is still running
Errr, no thanks. I'he had two that have died - horribly.
One a U8 (8Gb)
I usually regard Western DIgital as reliable, but I once had a WD drive fail 2 days out of the static bag. Worst timing, just migrated data and was booting to back up when, CLUNK!
I've got multiple 2-10GB drives ...some work ...others have not even tested
and the other was another U-job, I'm not sure of its size - 2Gb, I think
from Dumpster
what happened, what killed them
Question on another topic: Has anyone bought the tablet PC from Element Computing??? What did you think??
I have tons of 500mb western digital and a couple toshibas
and 3 2gb WD's
an 8gb WD and a 6gb WD
One thing I'd LOVE to do is to get a rotating set of CD-RW blanks going...
lol
no thanks
too expensive
--> dale (~dale@72678447.51781-64.st-tel.net) has joined #linuxshow
However, at the moment, I don't even have a burner...
too unreliable
that too
i wish i could afford a new laptop, i would definetly buy it off of element computing
cd-rw's go bad faster then they should
yup
The reason why the rw is because you buy them once, then you don't have to buy again for at least a hundred burns or so...
heh yah my laptop is only like 5 or 6 months old
HPze4325us
that's quite new
Someone told me they're rated for at least 10k burns, but I don't know if I believe that until I see one DO it.
what distro?
I've been looking into DVD-RWs because CDs are just not up for the job any more. SIckening when you think about it.
newbie: yes... I have not purchased one... but it looks nice. I'd like a tablet that I can betwork via wireless...
XP2000+, 40gb hd, 512ram, 15" screen, DVD/CD-RW
the only laptop i own is a old ibm 560 (133 mhz)
well I use slackware on my laptop
<-- NZheretic has quit (Quit: Client Exiting) heh - one dvd-rw would just about do the Maxtor with room to spare.
actually on everything
mwg: check the reviews prior to purchase...
<-- dale (~dale@72678447.51781-64.st-tel.net) has left #linuxshow (Leaving) but right now I wanted to test out morphix and its install
<-- tim-qcy has quit (Remote host closed the connection) there are some good priced DVD-+RW, but those do have their share of problems
morphix is cool
but I'm not liking debian so slackware will go back on my laptop soon
MGALUG: The drives or the media?
both
let me know what you think about morphix
morphix is good
im using the lite version with xfce4
Video friend of mine swears by TDK discs
One way around the problem is buy three media, do the same backup job to all three...
i like xfce4 cause it uses like <=20 megs ram One concern I have about tablets is performance ... I have a freind that has one that runs Windoze that he does not like the performance.
I am running Lindows 4.5 (debian) and my laptob and works fine
says that's what LucasArts uses
MGALUG: Well, I was given a +RW drive, so I guess I'll concentrate on media.
TDK is the only way to go
i allready tried veclinux
I'm using a Sony DVD+RW
although they smell ass
* viking667 has tdk CDs here - no idea how well they work yet...
piece of crap..
TDK or Toshiba might be better
TDK's dont peel like some do
MGALUG: Funny you should mention that...
Lindows is sok
it is all in the die
"dye"?
never speak of lindows in my presence please :)
dye
lindows sucks
the dye dies if it's not right
it works
its like paying for free software
lol
So if you overburn a disk does it curl up and dye? :-)
Mandrake is very nice ... have full network going at home (here)
all Mdk 9.2
Lets face it - when you buy Mandrake or Redhat, you're "paying for free software" ...
mwg: lol
yah except base mandrake install makes you look like a honey pot waiting to be accessed
Mdk here... all download editions
have cox.net highspeed.
since charter upgraded my dl speed to 2.4 mbbp, i have been downloadin every linux distro i could find
Mine too - 9.1
Actually when you buy Redhat and Mandrake your paying for a "Solution"
nice for updates
good site norlug
after trying and using maybe 50 or more distro's from SOL to peanut, slackware is what I have stuck with
had Mandrake, RedHat got tired of them
for customized updates
for Mandrake
9.2
all other distros are too slow
Or perhaps... when you buy Redhat... your paying and paying for a solution...
I prefer Mandrake/RedHot purely for RPM.
and slackware's font's rule
I'm not a Lindows user, but paying for a good repository service makes sense to me.
rpm is the devil!!!
urpmi on MDK rocks!
:)
you pay for the easy installs
yea, but he keeps my system running
And yes, I like urpmi - it's nearly as good as apt-get
RedHot? The distro from hell? :-)
paid nothing... well, the speed issue
rpms suck, but, urpmi rocks...go figure
well everybody starts with redhat, but after 7.3 i couldn't stand it
got Gentoo
7.3 was last "good" redhat version
all the rest were slow
I gave up on Redhat after 6.0 - transferred to TurboLinux 6 for a while, then someone sent me Mandrake 7.2, I've been hooked ever since.
... will finally plop in one of those xtra drives and test it in a Dell 750Mhz
Gentoo, have not tried it but it does seem great for an enthusiast....
i think i will use mepis when i go to upgrade my box
heard it's much faster than Redhat or Mandrake as it compiles for the system it is installed on
Gentoo you MUST have enough room or a compile (especially for X) else it'll be no good.
yea
errr, "room FOR a compile ... "
The great thing... all these distros are pretty good... just think what it was like 5 or 10 years ago...
speaking of DVD bruning this is a nice use of embedded linux http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/article/0,,2076_15020036_16603896,00.html
well when redhat feels slow on an XP1800+, 512ram, ti4200. its time to chunk it
seven years ago, I was playing with kernel 1.0.9
was sickening back then, but lots of people did use it
namaseit: bah. I work on a Cyrix MII-300 and a K6-II@533MHz
because it is better than Windose
newbie: Do u do any development? I'm wondering about mepis.org and KDE development.
Basically, the mome memory you can give them, the faster they'll "feel" to a certain point.
well with AMD hardware so cheap, no reason not to upgrade.
anything is better than windows
I can't spell for peanuts, sorry...
uhmmm - there is when I've GOT no money to upgrade WITH.
well slackware "feels" tons faster then any other system i've tried
Can you spell for walnuts?
What's the story with AMD -- is the Optron really going to be a good desktop system for Linux?
And no, I can't stroll the streets - already married.
did anyone here fill out that survey that microsoft was asking linux users to fill out?
newbie: .....huh?
there's another opteron thats like half the price, its only got 512 L2 cache but hey im not complaining
lol
hell no
Didn't even register on the radar...
the article is on osdn.net
ohhhhhhh.
but read responses on slashdot
newbie:yah lol, i said "theres no one feature that could make me switch to windows"
That's why I didn't see it - I haven't been to osdn for ages.
survey: was that for real?
yea
yah
some engineer put it up

it was not even hosted on a microsoft domain

satan is not deserving of that title
heh - one way to get authoritative SOA records, huh?

i wonder if microsoft aint running some hacked up SCO code in their OS
Got to go... happy holidays all...

I know it'd be pretty unlikely, given the "anticompetition" and all that, but ...
ouch
hey wait, does the new driver run on 2.6?
yeouch
i beleive the reason that microsoft refuses to reveil their source code is because of the hacked (stolen) code they are using
or do you still have to do minion.de patch?
Problem seems to be libGl.so.
newbie: naw they are just so huge and bloated that they can't and won't change their ways, too many hands in their company
Actually, someone ought to do a bit of code analysis as to what the MS compilers put out for typical code, match that up against typical asm from other operating systems...
You'd only pick up the simple stuff, but hey...
if you made billions off of doing something one way would you change?
where's that kde-devel site
MGALUG: irc.kde.org#kde-devel
10-4
didn't know they had an irc server, huh
then again who doesn't
namaseit: Actually, its freenode.

that sounds like a worthy project, create a open source compiler / viewer just to read the source code for microsofts os
* viking667 tinkers with the idea of plugging the second screen in, and "managing" wendows from the "other" machine...
newbie: yah until they slap the DMCA on you : newbie: uh uh - you'd have to be exceptionally good to unwind asm to C/C++
plus its not like java

Not only that, but the EULA epressly prohibits that except in places where it's allowed, which is practically nowhere anyhow.
oh wait but its just VBScript!!!
Bullshit.
:)
hey you don't know :)
it could be :)
naw I know it's not
i just thought i would suggest that
So that means that CMD.EXE is just a VBScript Interpreter? HAH! No WONDER it's so slow!

just make sure you put in the Version 9 codecs
yah it works fine
do i need to uninstall realplayer 8 before installing it
not personally fond of real but eh
nice christmas present too
it should install in RP8's directory

1Ghz & 700+ MB ram is too slow
no

viking667, what vid card?
you could just have extended desktop and open multiple xterm or konsole's
mgalug 1ghz to slow???
on the second monitor
to compile, listen to music Shoutcasted from god know where, scan documents, read email, rip/burn cds - one of those is likely to fail on me
when you are doing multiple tasks.
hmmm, I've never had a problem doing more then that on my 1.533
i can do multiple task on this 333
and have /home/user for each of my other 3 system hosted on this system...yea
me too...just slows down for some critical tasks like CD burning

so far, I have :0.0 and :0.1
So far I've only had to take care when using the DVD burner. My burn speed tops out at 10x for CDs, and I'm still working on the software to burn DVDs. Need more backup.
me too... but still slows system if doing all the other . kopete

less X overhead

ones a shuttle that I got for $45 and it has usb2, firewire, onboard lan/sound. The works.
and its a KT400 chipset
so AGP8x
as well
Except for the DVD drive, my burners are SCSI, so I haven't had much of a problem.

http://www.tcwo.com is ok
http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=2171

plus I *alwasy* get my stuff in 2 days cause its only 1 state away
most any local big store where I can get rebates...
tcwo is just a few miles from me so I go pick up from there
yah
yeah it sure would make things easier
slickdeals has good rebates posted...most of the time
newegg is down in Industry, CA and im in Springfield, OR

Bioware is being a bunch of bastards
not releasing any binaries for linux
JeffGerhardt: aha. ;-) thanks
but yah ET rules
btw
do you know why there seems to be like 1/10 as many servers listing?
yeah, ET is great :)
we are once again looking for mirror sites
or is it just me?
JeffGerhardt: how much bandwidth do you guys go through for the archived shows?

well
not even including qt library is kind of a problem

yah, im sure we'll see some bloodshed on tonights show hehe
or rather in here during the show
why is that?
well, maybe not
I think the problem is not so much in picking Gnome but not providing the Libs means dependancy hell for the Users. Its bad enough without delibratley making it more difficult
it shouldn't be dep hell if it uses apt
But the KDE/Qt stuff won't be available through APT if its not in the distro at all.
which it is debian
well Bruce said it would
but who knows at this point

leonscape: just point apt to some kde/qt packages
hmmm as i was wanting to read the linuxgazette, which one should i select???? .com .org or .net ?
.net
Namaseit i thought so, but ... ehhh... wtf is going on ??
.com wants .net to stop using linuxgazette name
segfault: but isn't that the point of UserLinux to make it easier? messing with background source list kinda defeats the object of the Distro
Namaseit so basicly a name quarrel?
well i think instead of choosing one, they should unit them, but eh.
yah
Namaseit cough
.com says its theirs and no one else can use it
Namaseit so ehh who are the orginal founders of linuxgazette? .com or .net?
leonscape: isn't it going to be easier for a non-linux user if they don't have to choose what desktop they want?
my grandma has no idea what the difference is between KDE and GNOME
t minus 27
but the point of UserLinux isn't for regular users like mom and pop, its for businesses
thats what Bruce keeps saying
Namaseit i thought its the ppl of linuxgazette.net
yah its .net

good day all
I just think ultimately it hurts the users, depriving them of features of KDE that might suit them better or make their experience better.
but hey, doesn't matter to me. I'm not going to be using UserLinux

Namaseit:Me too, and XFCE
:D
Namaseit basicly its : the papertrail says SCC is owner, but the founders disagreed and started linuxgazette.net instead
?
gentoo is nice but I dont like dependency checking cause it screws stuff up
such as?
SSC even
--> KayBee (keith@ip68-102-225-192.ks.ok.cox.net) has joined #linuxshow
well you get a package with 3 dependencies, those each have 2, then one package is broken in the chain and the whole system is fubar.

JeffGerhardt: what would you think of a new TLS website?
kev is checking the link
after years of hitting TV-ish 'news' sites with only Real-enabled audio/video I can't think of a reason to see a return to Real as a *cough* standard.
hi all
don't believe it either... on the linux platform
i'm stil here for a while if you have random gnome questions
he may be pointing to an old link
JeffGerhardt: "mirrow"?
what exactly are we looking at, the helix community or the realplayer download page on the real.com site?
jdub What video card do YOU personally use?
anyway GNOME does look slick, even more as latest KDE
some sites. like radio stations are only doing ms media now no more real which sucks

but virginradio in london does real/ms/mp3 stream. Kick ass station

bah, it's effectively out now :P
<-- jeremy has quit (Quit: Leaving)
* NigelS is just reading up on amd64 support

yeah, 2.5 is stable enough for most geeky linux dudes

not convinced that installing debian on an amd64 system with a SATA drive is going to be a pleasant experience
jdub: will gnome begin catering to us pathological customizers again in the future? i kind of miss some of the tweaks i was able to do with sawfish. :)
highly unlikely
well we need more ppl to use 2.6 to test it out to get those huge hungry bugs out
linux on amd64 just isn't ready for prime time yet
you can generally use gconf-editor to change some things
is there any particualar reason to stream in one format over another (besides license agreements?)
but outrageous configuration stuff is not really of interest anymore
<-- JeffGerhardt has quit ()
<-- markh has quit (Quit: Leaving)
didn't esr say on a show all you had to do was recompile your kernel to amd64 and you get most of the benefits doing that rather than recompile for the whole distro
nope.. meldroc it seems to require a lot of playing around :P - though..if you at least run the kernel compiled for it, that's something :)
are there any gnome ppl involved with the integrating of GTK into QT?
it's getting everything else to work
jdub: understood, and appreciated.
Namaseit: 'into'?
the scheduled january release of gentoo looks promising
let me find the link
integrating GTK into Qt?
I am opposed to integration myself, but I code little and never a GUI so I don't count
that doesn't make ense
sense
i can see maybe an emulation layer running on top of Qt
but it'd be a lot easier just to use GTK
jdub: who would be a good person to talk to about future bounty ideas?
segfault: no one :-)
segfault: the bounties are currently a test run only
segfault: sponsored by novell/ximian
<-- terracon has quit (Quit: Client exiting)
jdub: we need some nice totem/epiphany integration. somehow I don't think its going to get done without a bounty
if it works out, other people may want to get involved
cause there is a lot of work involved with that
segfault: sure it will, lodge bugs and write code! that's how we've always done it before.
hehe :)
<-- Scotter has quit (Quit: G'nite all)

jeff, any plans to update the gnome logo again?
heh, no :-)
but it was something about getting gtk apps to completely use kdethemes and such
and widgets
we love the current one
Namaseit: common themes are good enough, and there are a few now
--> Scotter (~Scott_Car@bgdock.com) has joined #linuxshow
I always preferred the first one - current one looks too surfy :)
well with this the user would never have to know or care if an app was QT/GTK
segfault: mozgtkembed is what ephiphany uses, to embed totem, you'd use mozilla-bonobo
jdubHey, one other question. Mousetrails?
Namaseit: nor do they need to with common themes
<-- Namaseit has quit (Quit: Leaving)
mkay kids. thanks as always for the show.

Namaseit: that doesn't really say much of substance :-)
or was it a MSI board... dunno less check
"yes, we would like better integration" -> sure.
there was more
hehe, a web site in the UK seems to have them n stock -hopefully they can deliver before christmas :P

NigelS the mania has become so mad, that a major hardware shop here : www.mycom.nl was not putting the AMD64 gear on their website... only occasional customers who happened to visit their shops , could see the EUR 400,= offering : ASUS board + AMD64 3000+ CPU
hehe :)
