Love this quote from Eric's blog: This sorry state of affairs is one of the better arguments for the proposition, widely shared among my peers, that graphics designers are basically a bunch of dope-smoking ponytailed dimwits who need to be smacked upside the head on a regular basis and not let anywhere near a software or web design without strict adult supervision by a cluebat-wielding programmer.
about Novell : I would't be suprised to find in 6 months that the complete SuSE Engineerung department is sitting at home without a job. The Engineerung jobs have of course been transferred to a ultra low-cost far east country. Thats currently the only financial Engineerung the marketing and sales department can come up with. How sad.

Four. Debian Redhat Suse Mandrake.

But MAndrake stands to benefit from RH's abandonment of the desktop
waystar: they certainly do
indeed.
true waystar
dyne:bolic rocks
Red Hat is not abandoning the desktop. Please get it right
Yea... Mandrake's implementation of the desktop is supurb
Look in the TLS archive... We had the dyne:bolic guy on the show a little while back.
there will be many people who want to stay with an rpm-based user-oriented distro. Fedora looks like a reasonable replacement but now that it's not in boxes on shelves, it's a dead issue in some cases
the are abandoning the consumer market, though
the consumer market, yea
who are mostly apathetic to linux... they just by their Dells with whatever MS crap is provided
linuxlobbyist well Mr. Sculicz certainly has told his Inversters speech, to get a couple a financial shoulder tabs. But why does he say that users @home should keep running Windows ???
and AOL
Debian is a shambles for anyone other than hardcore linux-heads.
just use debian unstable, what debian calls "unstable" is the stuff you find in new distros releases anyway
linuxlobbyist : RH has abandoned a large section of those businesses that chose RedHat because of the AVAILABLITY of support. Even if most of them never used it.
<-- segfault has quit (Quit: Client Exiting)

Either Debian sorts itself out, and jumps into the modern world or it'll slowly disappear up its own arse.
stock: right. Home users. I do think he's wrong, though
Motor: again, utter drivel.
ESR states it like it is
But Red Hat does have a Workstation product that is aimed at the corporate desktop
what redhat is trying to do is build up a userbase that is willing to shell out some cash to get the support. Support for no or low cost is going by the wayside.
I love Debian but it is a little bit beyond me
Motor: I disagree. It's a bit "fun" to install, but I think Debian runs great and is easy to maintain.
true free speech
yea!
Dr_Aevil: I don't know anyone who uses it who isn't an "expert", or has one on hand.
But there's always gonna have to be a distro for hardcore linuxheads

some love redhat and are squealing like little girls over fedora
linuxlobbyist : RH Workstation etc is Overpriced
NZheretic: totally agree
fedora would not recognize my Sound card.. RH 9 would
Dr_Aevil: The perception of Debian is a distro from a previous age that moves forward like a slug and does little but bicker and whine about Red Hat.
Motor: well i do, you rightly place the word expert in quotation marks, I know plenty of people with little experience if linux who use it. Once they know how to type in apt-get install...
which card, mga?
I'm screaming, but not in glee
Debian on the desktop, try Knoppix.
linuxlobbyist : The advanced server is priced OK and enterprise server is good value if your hosting Oracle.
If I can just get the kernel upgraded, I'm switching back to Debian
Motor: no _your_ perception of debian...
default that comes in my old dell.
yamaha
That's probly cause they have to reboot windoze every time the install anything
Dr_Aevil: No... you might try reading outside the Debian mailing lists.
linuxlobbyist i can only take the term "Corporate Desktop" with a grain of salt. why? cause in the past and it has always been sofar until this day : The Desktop Joe User wants to run @home was always very close in resemblance to the "Corporate Desktop"... well thats how it worked.
or turtle beach
linuxlobbyist : But for everything else, RH is way too overpriced.
The biggest problem with Red Hat's new approach is the abandonment of per-incident support
knoppix: Knoppix is very cool.
I thought yamaha sound was really well supported
We'll be right back
IMO
but listening in on my MDK 9.1 box
should have been detected
linuxlobbyist : Yes!.
I agree knoppix is cool, but why do they default to such an ugly desktop?
Knoppix 3.3 11-3 is cool
* toga wonders why he never sees knoppix on #knoppix?
even desktop is nice
One reason why Debian will never be irrelevant is all of its progeny... there are debian-based distros all over the place, beginning with Knoppix and Lindows
listening in on my MDK 9.2 box here :)
Motor: if you or whoever else you're basing these assertions on understood debian you'd realise they simply have a very strict understanding of the word stable - people just install debian stable and apt-get dist-upgrade to sarge or sid, and voila! you've got a perfectly maintainable Linux installation
Rehat should have switched existing RH8 & RH9 users over to a per insidence pay as you use approach.
well, identify which chipset it is, should be able to get the info from dell's support website... then find which kernel mod supports it, add it to /etc/modules.conf.. grin... it's not brain surgery....
Why should a high perfomance lab with 1000s of identical machines be forced to pay several $100 per machine just to get ANY SUPPORT WHATSOEVER?
damnsmall is fun to keep in the wallet
OpenOffice 1.1 is _the_ killer app in the current Linux distro's.
they shouldn't ...period
stock: it's shaping up nicely
Fedora has it
MGALUG : t
My Windows users love OpenOffice 1.1
linuxlobbyist: the lab would be better off going with the free stuff and hiring a top-notch administrator.
MGALUG : the other problem is that Red Hat has stated that Fedora will stay bleeding edge.
If I upgrade the basic system to sarge, will my woody software work?

heh RedHat Linux Blue Curve a.k.a. Fedora Core 1.0 : do i get a coredump in my mouth ? :)
The Fedora Legacy subproject may prove quite useful to places that need that old style Red Hat Linux type distribution
though it was not completely their fault
MGALUG : already fixed.
yup
true
mga: was fixed last week, before they finalized and shipped cds... I got my cd's today, shipped second day
gotta get the DL version tomorrow
Spiderbaby1958: If you upgrade you would be running the sarge versions.
Dr_Aevil: Excuses for why Debian is all but impossible to install for newbies? Stable... pfff... if we had to rely on Debian virtually no-one would be running Linux
lol
I got dialup, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to download all 10 disks
heh... I had egg on my face from that. had to replace a friend's cdrom that I had tried to do a 9.2 dualboot with
I had one go bad
wow that sucks
We're back!
via a VMware install of a late 9.2 RC
No your not!
Heh
all I need is a newer kernal so can configure my soundcard
The commercial Debian distros are pretty good
love that delay
wiped the firmware
30 sec delay
probably did not impress your freind
Hello everyone!
Motor: So there's the problem couldn't install so your pissed
but was under warranty
rehi y'all
Motor: excuses? you're talking total rubbish you realise - it's not at all impossible to install for newbies - you see there's this thing called a manual - it will be hard for people who have no understnading of computers whatsoever, but provided you've heard of a "hard disk" and a "partition"
just shipped it back
Voyager: No, I got Debian up and running. I just found it not worth the effort.
MGALUG create your own Mandrake 9.2 i586 FiveStar DVD-R (bootable install) http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=83579&cid=7312438:
cool thanks

marcels article on flightgear introduced me to the best flightsim
that was few years ago
Voyager: i reckon he's got a grudge since someone told him to RTFM on a forum or in an IRC channel, and now he hates debian :P
--> Convert2Lin (~gregg@ool-18e41911.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #linuxshow
Its the first column I look for.
I Debian isn't too hard to install for newbies... it asks you about 50 questions but I found that I could bluff my way through most of them... there's always a default
* toga needs to have AOL run under linux without w(h)ine for hi wife.
marcels the man
Dr_Aevil: Just listen to yourself -- as long as you understand harddisks and partitions and read the manual. Apparently you say this completely without irony.
s/hi/his/ Dr_Aevil: Yeah that's my gues too.
still haven't managed to get slaackware working
Motor: err yes, I see "read the manual" completely without irony - I didn;t say "understand" the hard disk and partitions, I said "heard of"
Motor: you're right in that I wouldn't want my mom to try it, but for me it's great.

Wine in a box!!!
bail on slackware and try veclinux
FOr mom, it's gonna be mandrake.
Vector Linux is very good
Dr_Aevil: Do you have any understanding of how most computers are sold, and who uses them? I doubt it... you have that in common with most zealots.
Argh! Got an emergency web page edit just as the show started. Anything terribly interesting get missed?
yeah
veclinux?
I cringe at getting into this debate, but why the heck should I have to read a manual to INSTALL an OS? There should be a FEW simple questions and that's it. Let me read the manual at my liesure as I'm playing with it

Motor: Yeah you have to understand how a computer works
veclinux based on slack but easier to install and a little leaner
If yur into Linux business cards, check out LNX-BBC (www.lnx-bbc.org). $5 at EFF store.
<-- Convert2Linx has quit (Ping timeout: 182 seconds)
Motor: ahh but that's the thing - you're saying "person who disagrees with me = zealot" i say - no I have practical experience of many people who are not experts using debian - in fact we've heard at least 2 of them already in the channel
* waystar remembers installing DOS 4.0
i don't like reading manuals either... i can never seem to find what i'm looking for
* waystar she had to read manuals way back then.
* graywind still has a working Tandy 1000 TL/2
Dr_Aevil: Ohh... in a Linux channel, there are Debian users. Amazing.
I'm no expert and I run Slack and Debian. Finally settle on Libranet
I think my secretary could install Mandrake...
--> cp (~cp@cp.starryskies.com) has joined #linuxshow
Motor: i'm contesting your claim that only experts use debian, yes this is a good source of linux users and lo and behold we have people who are not experts using debian
I have a tandy 1000SX that still runs bbs software
my parents windoez box is a mess, thinking of switching them
Linux is no harder to run as Windows, in fact is easier... so whats the difference ? handy humane Administration tools...
or least dualboot
I'd let my mom install MAndrake, except she wants to dual boot
yes!
Dr_Aevil: No, this is a channel with lots of experienced Linux users. I *HAVE* experience of trying to get newbies up and running with Linux -- and I know from that experience that Debian is a dead loss.
THat's why I'll install for her
I'm more of an expert than I used to be... buut that ain't saying much... debians great cause it gives you the most choices
THere is another diff, it's easier to find drivers for windoze, and some programs like realplay
waystar: setup the partitions and let her go from there... if she wants
at least of what i've triedso far
Motor: No this is a channel with all levels of Linux users.
heh... realplay is easy to find
Motor: what you;re ignoring is that they're not saying "I use debian" they're saying "I'm not an expert AND i use debian" or perhaps theyre zealots too
hoo boy
im more zealot than expert
he called me a zealot :P
Last linux install I did was actually easier than the last windows install i did.
ever try navigating the main realplay site instead of googling for it? Its a nightmare
No No No. Mandrake 9.2 is still geeky. 9.1 is for your parents. It's pretty much patched
losemodem
or at least since I last checked
heh
linux is definately as easy to use if not easier in a normal user context but it's the fear of change. People know one thing, they don't tend to like changing in the main
Because noone (users) installs winblows.
Dr_Aevil: And what else are they going to say? Let's face it, anyone criticising Debian faces the same thing... "I'm no expert and I use Debian"... when, in fact, compared to most people they most certainly are.
I would say that most Linux installs are easier than windows installs
Installing winbloze is a nightmare
drop the argument.. yeesh... it's all linux
hey motor take inspiration from this girl: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=85462&cid=7445710

Does Marcel talk about other X window managers?
Motor: I dont know what's rubbed you up the wrong way with respect to debian..I can't be bothered to argue any more
Dr_Aevil: Did she set it uo, and does she keep it running? Doubtful... being eight years old, and her dad around to sort it out.
i said take inspiration :P
what I've installed I would rate in this order for ease of installation: mandrake, storm, redhat,win98, debian, slackware(failed)
motor pl;ease pull it in
Dr_Aevil: As you wish... but it won't change the fact that Debian is an anachronism and is heading for the scrap heap unless it starts to change.
this is not an irc for warfare
GUYS, does the book cover KDE or Gnome? <===== yawn, troll
KDE
is somebody really warring in here?
kde's a very good window manager for folks who are used to the windows gui
Dodge and Burn man...smudge is great too
And I'm no artist
Dr_Aevil: Pfff. Maybe you should to stick to talking to people who agree with you.
(I'm still pretty incompetent with gimp)
what happens when you make KDE look like OS X
heh.. it's cooler
* toga uses Debian and XFCE4, guess I'm an expert ;)
waystar: does knoppix have solitaire? I just downloaded the Suse Live CD and it's really cool, but no solitaire
kde3.2-beta looks sweet
knoppix has lots of stuff
PLEASE NOTE: we are polite to each other on The Linux Show. People who are not civil should leave
windowmaker is great
my point exactly motor you have no room in you for compromise, just full of assertions
:o
I generated some gag labels for a play in a metter of minutes with the GIMP. SImple stuff is doable, I've never edited a photo though.
Knoppix has solitaire and freecell.
JeffGerhardt:
I've done a coupla little subgenius art pieces, dobbsheads goofd around

JeffGerhardt: Hear hear
yea... what's the link
gimp is good for removing redeye on photos.
Hey, I do that all the time!
Xnest, vncserver, etc.
Dr_Aevil: So what do you have? A message on slashdot, from a guy who says his daughter can use evolution once it's been set up for her under Debian?
gimp is great for any imaging processes
oh please now shutup, i said i dont want to argue with you
I really like gimp - very powerful- I use it alot at work
Possibly he chose KDE over Gnome because of the way RedHat broke Gnome??
Debian doomed for the scrap heap? Let me say, in utter civility, I disagree.
gimp, blender, pov-ray, openoffice draw - and that's on a windows machine at work
I used Corel for years... Gimp is nicer as it
is OS
FLOSS
I love using them more efficiently at home on Linux
Why use xnest? Just run 2 different X servers on 2 different vts?
it's fun
Install XFCE 4
Dr_Aevil: So don't.
Debian is a classic... but aI think I need to move from woody to sarge
fedoraguy: yeah, it's fun...plus I have a flatscreen that's a little tempermental and I don't like switch vts too often
Spiderbaby1958: tbh, i've been using sid for a year or so now, and I find it to be fine now - I like playing with new software admittedly :)
Does he talk about "hard" things to do for newbies like 3-D video and installing Java?
Spiderbaby1958: woody is really getting on a bit now - they should rename woody to legacy :P
java install is easy these days
See Xnest in action : http://www.marcelgagne.com/snapshot4.png
mostly
well, I am something of a newbie, and I need a newer kernel so I can get my soundcard configured
installing java may be "easy" getting it up and running on browsers can be confusing
yes, I'm using 2.6-test9 atm
and I haven't figured out how to upgrade yet... so I think I'll just go with Sarge
If using the bin file from Sun it is straight forward... someone needs to publish the directions
yeah, I've had trouble with java in browsers
but I'll get there!
I _should_ if I was to be good, install kernels the debian way, so i dont confuse my package list - but I dont, I just compile them as they are from kernel.org
wow, I could run windowmaker AND Xfce4
Quality not Quantity.
waystar: me too until the latest binary releases from sun
true. only three Linux classes at the CC here.

Q: Where did the name "KNOPPIX" come from?
A: Knoppix's inventor, Klaus Knopper.
Klaus Nopper the maker

is it nopper or k-nopper? :)
Knopper
Is CUPS used in the book?
yeah is printing covered in the book?

I think Klaus' name is pronounced K-nopper
Es ist Deutch, ja? ;)
uh oh, I can't see the prounciation in the faq either

Knopper is pronounce "Nopper" in German.
maybe he needs to put an audio file into the ISO like Linus did for Linux
:)
(There are lots of Germans where I grew up).
knoppix: Oh. I stand corrected, then. Oh, man, now I have to tell all those people I've been telling about K-noppix. Bummer. ;-)
