indians are cheaper
Hey, Dell uses them for tech support
i like the story about MIT's OpenCourseWare being developed mostly in India
i keep getting told hiring Indians is good for the economy. Great, but it's not good for _my_ economy.
they are paid a pittance
I bought Suse. Now to get my Novell Linux Engineer certification...
I'll change my view on outsourcing to India ONLY when they change THEIR laws that allow U.S. Citizens to work in their country on a visa
Dell is moving most of their tech support back to the USA
In india, they think they're living like kings on $5k/yr
It's hypocritical
comparison recently in the British press - a call centre worker here earns on average £13000, in India it's £1,200
even in US, most tech support solks are from India (in a lot of places)
so I need to move to India in order to get a job?
so if I move to india, will I be like a millionaire?? :)
windowsrefund: Good luck...one guy was told that it was illegal
No, you just need to work for 5k/ur
windowsrefund: that would be great if they would allow you to work there, but they won't
i wonder if working as an illegal is as easy in india as it is in the US
Eyecon: sure, you'd have a huge house and servants - but almost no amenities :)
scp ~/* india:
but if I move to india, I will be able to afford to start my own company? :)
Cisco is moving some of their Tech support back to the US. No one understood the Indians

but the Nesting feature of Dyne:bolic is super! cool

i do notice that security updates on linux tend to be presented as more urgent than equivalent Windows updates.
and when Windows ships with ten thousand packages, including fifteen ftp servers, seven http servers, three complete office suites, then we can compare patches released. ;)

winXP is an "OS" which can only run "modest" by abusing absurd high amounts of computer resources.

OO mibht be slower than MS Office, but it beats the socks of them..
the repeating is stream specific
ow. 34 second load time for OO.
yay debian :)
switch streams if you hear Arne repeating
I can't take it any longer. Someone stop Arne!
OO is great..
OO 1.1 ?
on a 650MHz athlon running Debian Sid & KDE 3.1.4
OO also starts faster if you either apply a patch discussed recently on the OO Dev list, or if you add "127.0.0.1 localhost.(none)" in /etc/hosts
yes debian is the right choice...

don't think it makes a big diff, tho
Fedora will probably be adopted well more by small-medium size business due to its influence not just from RH but also other main project communities like Debian
it's a bit faster now. thanx
* TreMobyl loves Impress
get more attention to it.. like live365.com and stuff..
Debian will definitely benefit from RH's move
MGALUG i have indeed 1024Mb ram onboard (which is insane of course)

nah... the more the better
I think Red Hat is in the process of proving they _aren't_ a "benevolent oligarchy", aren't they.
Would some of the $ go to Debian?
I bought Suse because of the RedHat flack
yep
live365 you can just upload recent epa sodes and let it go till next live feed
* waystar switched to Mandrake last spring
meldroc: check your hdparm settings
I already ran SuSE
Wharthogge: I agree
Bruce, please explain how yet another distro will solve the problem. <== Red Hat's a business. They do what it takes to make money. At least their switch to the enterprise market isn't nearly as evil as Microsoft's business as usual
Microsoft should do what Redhat did
IDIC
Mandrake 9.2 automatically optimizes the hdparm settings ... dma, etc
It took OO 20 seconds too load on my Fedora Core 1 laptop.
hantom: still not certain what the problem being adressed is.
do the sam qgonjon
fedoraguy running OO using a Celeron is of course useless, as this CPU cannot address/cache even enough RAM which is needed to even fire-up OpenOffice :))
does anyone think the mini computer systems on s2angel.com are a good deal?
meldroc: Though that is their objective, they know they have to support the community that brough them into existence.
OpenOffice is *huge*
s2angel: is that an ad?
not as big as MSOffice XP
OO rocks in many respects, not the least is the various UNO Bridges
Just remember, make programs work first, then make them fast
oo works ok for my needs on a celeron.. mind you you add too much more oging.. things get sticky
OO has more than MSOffice XP
never touched that... stopped with ms office 2000
Fedora is to RHEnterprise as Openoffice is to StarOffice (or viceversa)
<__ircmonkey> OOdraw kicks some serious butt!
had to get it with new Dells at work... seldom use it now
OOdraw *is* awesome...I use it instead of PAgeMaker
IT is what I do...
of course
I like dia
OO's file formats are actually comprehensible. Mmmm, xml
__IRCMonkey yes, combined with decent printing using cups, its pretty hefty gear :)
I can load a file from a ftp.. through konqueror and save.. I mean you can not do that in windows.. I live for thouse features
but use Mandrake with VMware or VNC for any WIndows work I need to do... i.e. pagemaker, outlook
konq has TONS of protocols. ssh, fish, more all the time
the 'costumers dont know what they want' and push economy is a 'law' in IT
corel
anyone used staroffice 7 and compare it to oo? is it better?
MGALUG: I got a problem with VNC at least tightvnc, I cant get the whole screen...
so can we conclude Linux is ready for the business desktop? i think it is IMHO.
<__ircmonkey> #stock: you said it.
Sun is giving StarOffice for free to Chinese students
I been trying to get a copy of wordperfect 2000 for linux (you can't even buy it!!!)
or least I can't seem to find it
MGALUG: and when I go up, the scroll bar doesnt work down... is that a known bug
all my screens at work are 1280x1024 or larger.. so no prob for me
I don't agree. MS is evil. Just because we have a small number of linux vendors, doesn't mean they are MS.
but have seen that

To Bruce Perens: I think opensource has gradually positioned itself toward a business model, but is indicative of not surviving or flourishing as it would within a community. redhat limited
"...whereas Linux has range of security-compatible products ( securer servers & applications ,

can't say having someone to blame helps either. MS and every other company disclaim all responsiblity for software problems. All you can do is wail helplessly at them and hope the fix it. if you take them to court you'll lose.
RHEL is sold to big corps wanting to migrate from expensive UNIX-en... the CFO just puts old UNIX contract next to RHEL contract, and sees all "features" are present, and the price is lower. aspecially IBM customers love it.

Thats what I said before, costumers, want to be costumers a-la microsoft
really beats Redhat for home use...
That can steal some market from RH's Enterprise 3.0
they understand and believe the their IT costumer position
Mandrake is stealing home market... and Lindows
with redhat when it comes to upgrade they kinda left the old redhat users in the cold? did they not?
yea
Why can't an org do what redhat did?
I never had any prob with redhat upgrade
sure they can
probably more effective in the long run just to hire a good linux guru, and replace him with another if he can't do the job.

Heh, wine fired up to run a macro virus from an Evolution email
right
a lot of KDE speedup comes from simple tricks like updating the font cache and making sure /tmp/.ICD-unix has correct permissions.
http://www.comcol.nl/bestel/sicxlc_4.htm <--- RedHat is tooo heavily overpriced... redhat will pay a penalty for that. install once, run run run
yep yep
i dont agree
using prelink also helps.
MGALUG it loads faster on the 800Mhz with Gentoo than on my 1.13Mhz with Mandrake
ClusterKnoppix
"Mandrake Linux Discovery 9.2 (MANd) EUR 39,00"
I want a MadeMeRich Linux that focus on making me rich :)
* NZheretic sighs
QUESTION: Are you effectively trying to create a "UnitedLinux" like desktop base standard?
I agree, take out the installation, and the desktop "score" is a lot more even
It is ever oh so sweet
Jzarecta: haha
I wish linuxgazette.net was mentioned. Maybe someone can talk about it next week
Bruce: I look forward to seeing it
waystar: awesome
Can we kick Sco out of it?
works for me
this Mandrake 9.2 is much faster than 9.1
Can you believe it
Lets just kick SCO
No SCO discusions today
yep, 9.2
* segfault kicks SCO
via complete reinstall
I agree, windowsrefund. Want to hear more about the Linux Gazette goings-on.
yep, complete reinstall
technically, they can't legally distribute LInux anymore since they violated the GPL.
Would at least make a change from SCO coverage...
waystar: what gentoo?
I havent tried 9.2 but every update I make on my 9.1 is 9.2 RPM
lets plan a mass attack or swarming lol
Just Say No
Thank you, everybody, for supporting The Linux Show.
Just Say No

* windowsrefund needs his weekly dose!
Can anyone summarize Bruce's point in a sentence?
MGALUG oh yes defenitely... mandrake 9.2 is way faster as 9.1 and even better , it has OpenOffice 1.1 onboard.
got it on a mag from Barnes&Noble
I think we peaked at 70 people in IRC tonight.

\bittorent the file I'll share it..
I like urpmi on Mandrake
and apt on Debian
oh lol shut up thats funny
segfault and converter: does it work for kernel, too?
we could have The Free Software Song!!
won't be too hard to get most of the files I need immediately, then I need to find a way to get apt to re-install the remainder.
Jzarecta Suse is nice so mfar for me, but no easy ATI driveer install darn it. I hate ATI drivers. Wish I have nVidia on the ol' ThinkPad
waystar: yep
Ah well, good luck - I had a minor meltdown involving a goodly portion of /etc before I realised what was going on, and killed the job from removing all other files.
wish nvidia open sourced their drivers
Silly me knows not to trust where mc actually exits any more.
yea
we could play RMS singing the Free Software Song :)
we could use that
that too
ATI doesn't really work well on any distro, Scotter.
I whipped up a script to find the destroyed files; I'll be able to snag most of 'em off of one of my boxen

are there any modern video cards out there with drivers that are both open-source and decent?
waystar: portage will update your kernel sources, but it's up to you to build the kernel/modules, etc. and install. there's a genkernel thingie, but i don't trust it yet.
<-- Jose has quit (Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.35 [Mozilla rv:1.5/1])

meldroc: there are Free ATI RAdeon drivers
meldroc I think that even the existance of ATI in its market, has lots to do with its contract with a redmond software company.

JeffGerhardt talk to Claus Knopper : get you website bookmarked inside his knoppix.iso :)
They are MS dudes
JeffGerhardt: what was the story with the TLS video shows?
yea...good idea stock
tosin: hehe :)
link on the desktop?
a TLS mozilla theme ;-)
ugh
MGALUG well i dunno, how far it goes :)
TLS is recorded live from North Aurora Illinois
I don't see how Microsoft manages to accrue fanboys
and broadcast from our NOC in Chicago
Where is N. Aurora?
TreMobyl: yeah, its sad
* TreMobyl goes to MapQuest
TreMobyl: north of aurora
seggie: ha ha ha
directly North of Aurora
they feed them sandwiches ... like in July
:P
Jeff, possible to hear more about the Linux Gazette goings-on in a future show?
remember Jeff?
right across the expressway
street?
JeffGerhardt but again, calling the masses is neat, but can erudate the quality :)
Jeff: what do you use to channel the calls for broadcast
joe is that you?
just listened to the July show on way home
zip?
lol
icecast
MS supplied the sandwiches in bags... that's how they keep getting suckers to ponyup
whart> that is a sticky issue
http://www.linuxgoldcorp.com/
lots of hurt feelings
I know it's sticky but I think it's important.
Jeff: what's your website address
lots of brused egos
thelinuxshow.com
lol
i meant one similar to ESR
On both sides as far as I can tell. So far I haven't seen or heard anything that seems to rationally cover both sides of the issue.
Phil hughes has made a seroies of very logical arguments for the actionsof SSC
